This document explains transparently how we collect, process, and utilize information when you interact with our platform, submit archival material, or conduct research.

Information We Collect

We only collect data that is necessary to maintain our archival infrastructure, authenticate researchers, and preserve web history accurately.

  • Account & Authentication Data: Email addresses, usernames, and encrypted credentials for registered researchers and contributors.
  • Archival Submissions: URLs, HTML/CSS/JS assets, metadata, and descriptive tags voluntarily submitted for preservation.
  • Technical & Log Data: IP addresses, browser types, device information, and access timestamps to monitor server health and prevent abuse.
  • Usage & Analytics: Search queries, page views, and interaction patterns (anonymized and aggregated) to improve archive discoverability.

How We Use Your Information

Primary Usage Purposes

We process your information strictly for the following operational and archival purposes:

  • Digital Preservation: To capture, store, and index submitted webpages, ensuring they remain accessible in their original context and format.
  • Platform Maintenance: To authenticate users, manage account preferences, and provide secure access to restricted or time-gated archival collections.
  • Research & Education: To generate aggregated, anonymized datasets for academic studies on web evolution, technological shifts, and cultural trends of the 1990sā€“2000s era.
  • Service Improvement: To analyze search patterns and navigation flows, allowing us to optimize our indexing algorithms and improve the researcher experience.
  • Security & Compliance: To detect fraudulent access attempts, prevent DDoS attacks, and comply with legal obligations regarding historical content takedown requests (DMCA/Copyright).
  • Communication: To send service announcements, archival verification requests, and research access approvals to registered contributors.

We do not sell, rent, or trade user information to third-party advertisers. We do not track individuals across unrelated websites for behavioral advertising purposes.

Retention & Security

Account data is retained only as long as your profile remains active or as required by law. Technical logs are automatically purged after 90 days unless flagged for security investigations. Archival content you submit is preserved indefinitely unless you exercise your right to deletion, subject to historical preservation exemptions.

All sensitive data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest (AES-256). Access to contributor databases is strictly limited to authorized preservation engineers and compliance officers, with activity monitored and audited quarterly.

Your Rights & Choices

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:

  • Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate or incomplete account information.
  • Request deletion of your account and associated metadata (archived public web content may remain accessible as historical record).
  • Opt out of non-essential analytics tracking via your browser settings or our privacy dashboard.
  • Restrict or object to processing for research purposes.
