1990–1994 The Dawn of Browsing
Tim Berners-Lee's WorldWideWeb (later renamed Nexus) launched in 1990 on a NeXT machine. It was both editor and viewer, running in a sophisticated X11 window. By 1993, Mosaic introduced the first widely accessible graphical interface, placing images inline with text and popularizing the "Back/Forward" navigation paradigm.

1995–1999 The Browser Wars & Web 1.0
Netscape Navigator 1.0 released in 1994, igniting the first browser war. Microsoft responded with Internet Explorer, bundled with Windows 95. This era introduced frames, plugins, ActiveX, JavaScript, and the infamous "Best viewed in IE 5" banners. Web pages became cluttered with visitor counters, animated GIFs, and MIDI autoplays.

2000–2010 Standards, Speed & Mobile
The dot-com bust shifted focus from flashy features to performance and standards compliance. W3C's CSS and DOM specifications took hold. Firefox emerged in 2004 as a lightweight, extension-friendly alternative, sparking the modern open-source browser movement. Meanwhile, the iPhone (2007) introduced WebKit to mobile, forcing browsers to rethink touch interactions and viewport scaling.
2011–Present Engines, Sandboxes & AI
Chromium's rise standardized Blink and V8 as the de facto web runtime. Security models evolved from basic HTTPS warnings to full sandboxing, CSP headers, and same-site cookie policies. Today, browsers are OS-level applications: integrating AI assistants, containerization, hardware acceleration, and progressive web app runtimes. Yet, beneath the abstraction, the core remains Berners-Lee's original vision: a universal document network.
