// Frequently Asked Questions

How far back does the archive go?
Our collection begins in 1990, capturing the very first public webpages. We systematically crawl and preserve content from 1990–1999, with selective captures into the early 2000s. New submissions are continuously processed and added to the historical timeline.
Can I recover a deleted personal website from the 90s?
Yes. Use our Era Recovery Tool and enter the original URL or approximate domain name. Our crawlers cross-reference early directory indexes, GeoCities snapshots, and university mirror servers. Success rates vary based on how widely linked the site was during its active period.
Why do some pages look broken or use missing fonts?
Early web pages relied on locally installed fonts, proprietary browser plugins, and deprecated HTML tags. We render archives using emulated Netscape 3.0 and IE 4.0 environments. For missing assets, we use a fallback font stack and display a "Original Media Missing" badge. You can request manual restoration via the support ticket form.
How does the API rate limiting work?
Free tiers allow 100 requests per hour. Pro plans scale to 5,000/hour, and Enterprise accounts receive dedicated endpoints with custom limits. All responses include `X-RateLimit-Remaining` headers. If you're being throttled, implement exponential backoff or contact us to review your usage patterns.
Can I submit a website to be archived?
Absolutely. Navigate to /submit, paste the live or dead URL, and add context (approximate year, known host, related links). Our archival team verifies integrity, captures linked assets, and assigns a permanent WARC identifier. Academic and preservation submissions are prioritized.
Do you host MIDI, GIF, or Flash content?
We preserve and serve .MIDI and .GIF files natively. Flash content is archived in .SWF format and playable through our embedded Ruffle emulator. All media is sandboxed and stripped of modern tracking scripts to maintain historical accuracy while ensuring security.
