Launch & Early Days

Created by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith. Featured a minimalist, text-heavy interface optimized for 14.4k modems. "Why don't you put your email on the Internet?"

1998

Microsoft Acquisition

Acquired by Microsoft for $400M. Rebranded as MSN Hotmail. Added 5MB default storage, HTML email support, and basic anti-spam filters.

2004

Redesign & Groups

Major UI overhaul with MSN aesthetic. Introduction of Hotmail Groups, custom themes, and integrated chat. Storage increased to 25MB free.

2009

Next Generation

Rollout of the AJAX-driven interface. Drag-and-drop folders, inline image viewing, and 25GB free storage. Transitioned from frames to DOM-based rendering.

2013

Outlook.com Migration

Hotmail officially rebranded to Outlook.com. Legacy login preserved but underlying architecture modernized. Final captures archived before sunset.
