The Pioneer of Web Crawling

Launched in 1994 by Carnegie Mellon University researchers, Lycos was among the first search engines to use a dedicated web crawler (originally named Lycos) to index the growing World Wide Web. At its peak, it indexed over 30 million pages and served as a primary gateway to the internet for millions of users.

This archive preserves the exact HTML structure, inline CSS, and JavaScript behaviors used during the mid-to-late 1990s, capturing a pivotal era before AJAX, responsive design, and modern SEO practices transformed search interfaces.
