Translation Policy

1. Overview & Purpose

Aevum Encyclopedia is committed to breaking linguistic barriers and making verified, high-quality knowledge accessible to readers worldwide. This Translation Policy establishes the standards, workflows, and ethical guidelines for all translated content published on our platform.

All contributors, editors, translators, and automated systems operating within the Aevum ecosystem must adhere to these guidelines to ensure consistency, accuracy, and cultural respect across all supported languages.

2. Scope & Language Priorities

Translational efforts apply to all article types, including but not limited to encyclopedia entries, reference guides, multimedia descriptions, and community discussions. Currently, Aevum supports 140+ languages, with continuous expansion based on community demand and resource availability.

New language variants may be proposed through the Language Request Portal. Approval requires demonstration of native speaker availability, existing terminology frameworks, and a minimum of 10 verified contributors.

3. Quality & Review Standards

Every translation undergoes a multi-tiered quality assurance process to maintain academic rigor and readability:

• Back-Translation Verification: Critical passages are independently re-translated into the source language to detect semantic drift or ambiguity.
• Native Speaker Review: All published translations must be approved by at least two verified native speakers fluent in academic or professional terminology.
• Terminology Consistency: Translators must utilize the official Aevum Terminology Database to ensure standardized naming conventions across disciplines.
• Cultural Adaptation: Literal translations are discouraged when they obscure meaning. Content should be adapted to respect local context, idioms, and regional conventions without altering factual accuracy.

4. AI & Human Collaboration

Aevum embraces artificial intelligence as a collaborative tool, but human expertise remains the final authority on all published content.

1. AI Drafting Assistance: Translators may use AI models to generate initial drafts, suggest terminology, or identify syntactic patterns. All AI-assisted output must be explicitly tagged during submission.
2. Human Mandatory Review: No AI-generated or AI-assisted translation may be published without thorough human editing, fact-checking, and stylistic refinement.
3. Transparency Requirement: Contributors must disclose AI usage in the article history log. Failure to disclose constitutes a violation of the Integrity Policy.
4. Continuous Training: Approved human-reviewed translations are anonymized and used to improve Aevum's internal language models, ensuring future AI assistance grows more accurate and context-aware.

5. Copyright & Licensing

All original content on Aevum Encyclopedia is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International). Translated works inherit the same license terms.

• Translators retain moral rights to their specific linguistic rendering but waive exclusive commercial claims over the translated text.
• Attribution must clearly credit both the original author(s) and the translator(s) in the article metadata and history logs.
• Third-party content (images, diagrams, audio) must maintain its original license and cannot be redistributed beyond Aevum's fair-use provisions.
• Machine translation output is not subject to copyright protection but requires proper attribution to the source article and translation engine where applicable.

6. Disputes & Escalation Process

Translation disagreements, quality disputes, or licensing conflicts are resolved through a structured escalation pathway:

1. Community Discussion: Initial concerns should be raised in the article's talk page or the dedicated Translation Forum.
2. Editorial Mediation: If unresolved within 14 days, a neutral senior editor in the relevant language group will review both versions and issue a binding recommendation.
3. Translation Committee Review: Appeals can be submitted to the Global Translation Committee, which convenes biweekly to address complex linguistic, cultural, or licensing disputes.
4. Final Determination: Committee decisions are final and documented in the article's policy log. Revisions must align with the ruling within 30 days.

Contributors who repeatedly ignore editorial rulings or engage in edit wars may face temporary or permanent translation privileges restrictions.

7. Policy Updates & Contact

This policy is reviewed quarterly and updated to reflect changes in technology, linguistic standards, and community feedback. Substantive changes will be announced via the Official Newsletter and posted in the Policy Discussion Hub at least 30 days before implementation.
