Materials Scientist (2D Materials)
About the Role
At Aevum Zenth, we don't just adapt to the future—we engineer it. Our Advanced Research division is seeking a Staff Materials Scientist to lead our 2D materials research initiative. You will drive the synthesis, characterization, and commercial integration of next-generation van der Waals heterostructures, transitioning breakthrough nanomaterials from benchtop discovery to cross-divisional manufacturing.
Impact Scope: Your work will directly enable breakthroughs in aerospace shielding, next-gen semiconductor interconnects, high-density energy storage, and quantum device architectures across 6+ operating divisions.
Reporting to the Director of Materials Innovation, you will collaborate with physicists, chemical engineers, and industrial partners to scale novel material systems while maintaining rigorous scientific standards and IP protection.
What You'll Do
- Design and execute advanced synthesis protocols (CVD, MBE, ALD, exfoliation) for 2D materials including TMDs, MXenes, graphene derivatives, and 2D oxides.
- Lead multi-technique characterization efforts utilizing TEM, SEM, AFM, Raman, XRD, and ARPES to validate material quality and electronic/optical properties.
- Develop scalable transfer, functionalization, and heterostructure assembly processes compatible with existing semiconductor and energy manufacturing pipelines.
- Bridge the lab-to-fab gap by collaborating with Process Engineering teams to define DOE parameters, yield metrics, and qualification standards for pilot production.
- Author and patent high-impact research, presenting findings at premier conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.
- Mentor postdoctoral fellows and junior scientists, fostering a culture of rigorous experimentation and cross-disciplinary innovation.
What You Bring
- Ph.D. in Materials Science, Condensed Matter Physics, Chemistry, or related field.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with 2D/nanoscale material synthesis and advanced characterization.
- Proven track record of translating fundamental research into applied engineering solutions (publications, patents, or industry deployments).
- Deep expertise in thin-film deposition, surface science, and interface engineering.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools (Python/Matlab) and statistical process control methodologies.
- Strong communicator capable of translating complex scientific concepts for cross-functional and executive audiences.
Preferred but not required: Experience with cleanroom operations, ISO/SEMI standards, or prior work in semiconductor/aerospace material qualification.
