Your Rights & Choices
At In Therapy, your autonomy, dignity, and informed consent are at the heart of our practice. This document outlines your legal and ethical rights as a client, your choices in treatment, and how we uphold transparency and care.
1. Right to Confidentiality
Everything you share in therapy is protected by strict confidentiality standards, in compliance with HIPAA (and applicable state/international privacy laws). Your personal health information is never shared without your explicit written consent, except in the following legally mandated situations:
- Imminent risk of harm to yourself or others
- Suspected abuse or neglect of a child, elder, or vulnerable adult
- Court orders or legal subpoenas (we will notify you whenever legally permissible)
- Professional consultation with supervisors for your care (anonymized where possible)
Note: Our digital platform uses end-to-end encryption, HIPAA-compliant storage, and multi-factor authentication to safeguard your data.
2. Right to Informed Consent
You have the right to fully understand your treatment before agreeing to it. This includes:
- Clear explanation of therapeutic goals, methods, and expected timeline
- Disclosure of potential risks, benefits, and alternatives
- Transparent information about fees, payment options, and insurance coverage
- The right to ask questions and receive honest answers at any stage
Consent is an ongoing process. You may review, revoke, or update your consent at any time.
3. Choice of Therapist & Approach
You are never obligated to stay with a therapist who isn't a good fit. You have the right to:
- Request a therapist based on specialty, background, language, or therapeutic modality (e.g., CBT, EMDR, psychodynamic, trauma-informed)
- Switch therapists if you feel the therapeutic alliance isn't supportive or productive
- Participate in treatment planning and set your own pace and boundaries
Our care coordinators will assist you with seamless transitions, ensuring continuity of care and minimal disruption.
4. Control Over Sessions & Continuity
You maintain full control over your engagement with our services:
- Scheduling: Choose session times that fit your life. We offer flexible morning, evening, and weekend availability.
- Modality: Opt for in-person, video, or audio-only sessions based on your comfort and needs.
- Pausing or Canceling: You may reschedule with 24-hour notice, pause care temporarily, or terminate services entirely without penalty.
- Emergency Support: If you experience a crisis between sessions, we provide clear guidelines for immediate support resources.
5. Access to Records & Data Privacy
You have the right to request copies of your clinical records, session notes (where permitted), and treatment summaries. Requests are processed within 30 days, in accordance with privacy regulations. You may also:
- Request corrections to inaccurate information
- Restrict certain information from being shared with insurance providers (where legally allowed)
- Request deletion of non-mandated digital data upon termination of care
6. Right to File Complaints & Seek Second Opinions
We take feedback seriously and encourage transparency. If you are unsatisfied with any aspect of your care, you may:
- Speak directly with your therapist or our Clinical Director
- File a formal complaint through our patient advocacy team
- Request a second opinion from an independent licensed professional
- Contact state licensing boards or professional ethics committees if you believe standards were not met
All complaints are reviewed confidentially, and you will receive a written response within 14 business days.
7. Client Responsibilities & Mutual Expectations
Therapy is a collaborative process. To ensure the best outcomes, we kindly ask that you:
- Provide honest information about your history, symptoms, and goals
- Communicate openly about what is or isn't working in sessions
- Adhere to agreed-upon scheduling and cancellation policies
- Respect the therapeutic boundaries and professional conduct outlined in our terms of service
8. Questions & Contact
If you have questions about your rights, need clarification on any policy, or wish to discuss your care preferences, our team is here to help. We believe transparency builds trust, and trust fuels healing.
