Editorial Standards & Guidelines

Introduction

The Daily Pulse exists to inform, not to persuade. Our editorial standards are the foundation of our newsroom, guiding every decision from story selection to final publication. We believe that trustworthy journalism is essential to a functioning democracy, and we hold ourselves to the highest professional benchmarks.

These standards apply to all journalists, editors, photographers, videographers, and digital producers employed by or contracted with The Daily Pulse. Regular training and editorial reviews ensure consistent application across all platforms.

Core Principles

Every article, broadcast, and digital feature must align with these foundational values:

Sourcing & Attribution

Strong journalism rests on strong sourcing. All material published under The Daily Pulse must meet these criteria:

• Primary Sources: Direct quotes, official documents, and firsthand accounts are prioritized.
• Attribution: Every claim, statistic, or opinion must be clearly attributed. "Experts say" is unacceptable without naming the institution or publication.
• Anonymous Sources: Used only when necessary to protect sources from retaliation or when vital information would otherwise remain hidden. Requires Editor-in-Chief approval and must meet strict necessity criteria.
• Paraphrasing: Must accurately reflect the source's intent and context. Out-of-context framing is strictly prohibited.

Independence & Conflict of Interest

Journalists must disclose any personal, financial, or professional relationships that could compromise perceived or actual objectivity.

1. Staff may not attend press events, receive gifts, or accept hospitality from sources without prior editorial clearance.
2. Journalists must recuse themselves from covering stories involving close relatives, employers, or significant personal investments.
3. Opinion and editorial content must be clearly labeled and separated from straight news reporting. Opinion writers may not report on the same subjects in a news capacity.
4. Advertising and sponsorship never influence editorial content, placement, or tone. A strict "Chinese wall" separates our commercial and news divisions.

Digital & Multimedia Ethics

In an era of viral content and algorithmic distribution, digital ethics are paramount:

• Photos & Video: No manipulation that alters factual meaning. Crop lines must preserve context. AI-generated imagery must be explicitly labeled.
• Headlines: Must accurately reflect the article's content. Clickbait, sensationalism, and misleading framing are prohibited.
• Social Media: Staff must distinguish personal accounts from official newsroom channels. Journalists should not engage in partisan debates online while identifiable as Daily Pulse staff.
• Data & Algorithms: Automated publishing tools require human editorial oversight. Data visualizations must cite methodology and limitations.

Corrections & Errata Policy

Errors, when they occur, are corrected promptly and transparently. We view corrections not as failures, but as evidence of our commitment to accuracy.

• Substantive errors will be corrected online and noted at the top and bottom of the article with a clear explanation and timestamp.
• Minor typographical errors may be corrected without notification.
• If an error significantly changes the meaning of a story, it will be promoted to the homepage's "Corrections & Clarifications" section within 24 hours.
• All corrections are logged and reviewed quarterly by the Ombudsman.

Accountability & Reader Feedback

Trust is earned through transparency and responsiveness. The Daily Pulse maintains an independent Ombudsman role to address reader concerns and audit editorial practices.
