The Rise & Fall of GeoCities
Launched in 1994 by David Bohnett and Julian Semkow, GeoCities was a free web-hosting service that empowered millions of everyday people to publish their own websites. Organized into fictional "neighborhoods" like Brooklyn, SiliconValley, and StarTrek, it became a cultural cornerstone of the 1990s internet.
When Yahoo! acquired GeoCities in 1999, it remained a beloved space for personal expression, hobbyist communities, and early e-commerce experiments. Despite its closure in 2009, millions of pages, guestbooks, MIDI files, and animated GIFs were lost to the digital void—until now.
Our Preservation Methodology
Recovering GeoCities isn't just about scraping old URLs. It requires digital archaeology, protocol emulation, and careful reconstruction of early web technologies.
Deep Crawling
Our crawlers traverse cached Wayback Machine snapshots, ISP archives, and forgotten search indexes to map surviving GeoCities URLs.
Media Recovery
Broken links are reconstructed using filename patterns, archive mirrors, and community-submitted media directories.
HTML Reconstruction
Tables, frames, and inline CSS are preserved exactly as authored. We avoid "modernizing" layouts unless explicitly requested.
Interactive Emulation
Guestbooks, hit counters, and WebRing navigations are emulated using lightweight scripts that replicate 90s functionality.
Neighborhood Spotlight
GeoCities organized sites into thematic districts, each with its own culture, design conventions, and community spirit.

Personal journals, photography, poetry, and "Welcome to my homepage" classics.
SiliconValley
Early tech demos, startup portfolios, and DIY hardware project pages.
