📜 Why MIDI Ruled the 90s Web

Before broadband and optimized MP3 players, .mid files were the standard for web audio. Weighing just 10–50KB, they could deliver synthesized orchestral or chiptune soundscapes without choking 14.4k modems. Webmasters embedded them using <bgsound src="loop.mid" loop="infinite"> in IE or <embed src="track.mid" hidden="true" autostart="true"> for Netscape.

Our preservation pipeline extracts these files, validates their chunk structures, and maps them to their original host URLs. Many were lost when Geocities, Tripod, and Angelfire shut down their legacy storage in the 2000s.
