Built on First Principles
The 1990 Web Archive was founded during a time when the World Wide Web was still experimental. Our founders were early network engineers, digital librarians, and culture observers who recognized that the ephemeral nature of the web threatened to erase a pivotal chapter of human communication.
What began as a single UNIX server running custom Perl scripts has grown into a decentralized, globally distributed preservation network. We operate transparently, publish our methodology openly, and remain fiercely independent of corporate or government funding.
