Usenet Collection
Preserving the decentralized discussion networks that predated and shaped the modern web. From text-based forums to binary archives, explore 25+ years of NNTP history.
Before the Web: The Network Culture
Usenet emerged in 1979 as a distributed discussion system using the UUCP protocol, evolving to NNTP in 1980. By 1990, it was the primary medium for technical discussion, academic exchange, and early digital community building.
Our archive captures the transition from text-only gateways to early binary transfers, preserving the cultural and technical evolution of networked communication before HTTP became dominant.
