Preserving the NNTP & Mail Architecture

Before social media and cloud platforms, knowledge and community lived in decentralized networks. Usenet (Usenet Newsgroups) and early L-Lists operated on NNTP and SMTP/POP protocols, creating a unique culture of netiquette, threading, and ASCII-driven expression.

"We don't just save messages. We reconstruct entire conversation trees, preserve binary attachments, and map cross-references across decades of decentralized discussion."

Our crawlers ingest raw `.gz` spools, `nnrpd` logs, and archived `majordomo` digests to rebuild the topology of early internet discourse. Every post is cryptographically timestamped and linked to its historical context.

How Decentralized Discourse Shaped the Web

1979

Usenet Born

Duane Witz and Tom Truscott create the first Usenet transfer system using UUCP between Duke and UNC.

1986

NNTP Protocol

Network News Transfer Protocol standardizes how newsgroups synchronize across disparate servers.

1991

alt.* Explosion

Unmoderated newsgroups proliferate. Fandom, tech support, and niche communities migrate online.

1995

Commercial ISPs

AOL, CompuServe, and EarthLink integrate NNTP. Mailing lists become the backbone of open-source projects.

1999–2001

Archive Shift

Spam overwhelms major hierarchies. Preservation efforts begin. Our archive ingests the final raw spools.
