Aiko Tanaka

Aiko Tanaka (born March 14, 1978, Kyoto, Japan) is a distinguished computational linguist and cognitive scientist widely recognized for her foundational work in semantic knowledge representation and multilingual natural language processing. As the founding director of the Institute for Structured Cognition at Kyoto University and a leading architect behind modern knowledge graph methodologies, Tanaka has reshaped how artificial intelligence systems interpret, verify, and interlink human knowledge.[1]

Born in Kyoto to a family of academic archivists, Tanaka exhibited early interest in linguistic patterns and information organization. She graduated summa cum laude in Computational Linguistics from Kyoto University in 2000 before pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge under Professor Elena Rostova, a pioneer in semantic network theory.[3]

Her 2005 dissertation, Topological Representations of Cross-Linguistic Meaning, introduced novel graph-based algorithms for resolving polysemy in low-resource languages. The work laid the mathematical groundwork for later developments in neural symbolic AI.

Between 2008 and 2015, Tanaka developed the Tanaka-Rostova Ontology (TRO), a machine-readable framework for mapping conceptual relationships across disparate domains.
