Elias Thorne Varrick ([1] October 14, 1948 – March 22, 2024) was a prominent theoretical physicist and mathematician known for his groundbreaking work in quantum topology and non-commutative geometry. His contributions laid the foundation for modern quantum computing architectures and earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1996.

Elias Varrick passed away peacefully on March 22, 2024, at his home in Palo Alto, California, surrounded by his family. He was 75 years old. The cause of death was complications from Parkinson's disease, confirmed by his attending physician, Dr. Sarah Chen.[10]

News of his passing was met with an outpouring of tributes from the scientific community. The Nobel Committee issued a statement calling him "one of the most transformative physicists of the late 20th century." His former doctoral students organized a virtual symposium, Mathematics Beyond Boundaries: Honoring Elias Varrick, in May 2024, which featured presentations on the current applications of his theories in quantum computing and condensed matter physics.[11]

In 2025, Stanford University dedicated the Varrick Hall of Theoretical Physics, a new research building designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration between mathematicians, physicists, and computer scientists. The building's architecture incorporates geometric patterns inspired by Varrick's visualizations of topological manifolds.[14]
