Editorial Standards & Guidelines
The principles, processes, and commitments that guide every story we publish.
Our Commitment to Truth
Aevum News exists to inform, clarify, and hold power to account. We believe that rigorous journalism is a public service, not a commodity. Every decision we make—from story selection to headline writing—is guided by four foundational pillars: Accuracy, Independence, Transparency, and Accountability.
"We do not chase speed over truth. We do not simplify complexity into sensationalism. We report what is verified, contextualize what is complex, and correct what is wrong—without hesitation."
Core Editorial Principles
- Independence: Aevum News is owned by a independent trust. We accept no government funding, political patronage, or corporate sponsorship that could influence editorial decisions. Advertisers never see, edit, or approve our content.
- Accuracy First: We verify every claim, name, statistic, and quote before publication. When in doubt, we consult additional sources. We label speculation clearly and distinguish it from confirmed reporting.
- Fairness & Balance: We seek multiple perspectives on contested issues. We give subjects the right of reply before publication when appropriate. We avoid framing that prejudices readers before they engage with the facts.
- Clarity Over Jargon: Complex topics are explained plainly. We define technical terms on first use and avoid unexplained acronyms. Our writing serves the reader, not the industry.
- Human Dignity: We report on crises, conflict, and vulnerability with care. We do not exploit trauma for engagement. We identify victims by name only when consent is obtained or when public interest overwhelmingly outweighs privacy concerns.
Fact-Checking & Verification Process
Every piece of news content passes through a structured editorial pipeline before publication:
Source Identification
Reporters document primary sources. Anonymous sourcing requires senior editorial approval and must be justified by public interest.
Cross-Verification
Key claims are verified by at least two independent sources. Documents are authenticated. Data is checked against original publications.
Legal & Ethics Review
Sensitive stories undergo review by our legal team and ethics committee for defamation risk, privacy compliance, and bias mitigation.
Editorial Sign-Off
Deputy editors verify factual integrity, clarity, and tone. Copy editors check grammar, style, and formatting before publication.
Corrections & Retractions Policy
We hold ourselves to the standard that publishing errors is not failure, but ignoring them is. Our correction process is swift, visible, and systematic:
How We Handle Errors
1. Immediate Acknowledgment: Verified errors are corrected within 30 minutes of confirmation. Significant factual mistakes trigger a prominent correction notice at the top of the article.
2. Transparent Notation: Corrections are logged publicly with timestamps, descriptions of the error, and the accurate information. We never quietly "edit and disappear" critical facts.
3. Retractions: If a story is fundamentally flawed or based on unverified claims, it is retracted entirely with a clear explanation. Retractions are filed in our public Corrections Register.
4. Reader Reports: We welcome correction submissions via email. All reports are reviewed within 48 hours by our Standards Desk.
Sourcing & Conflict of Interest
Anonymous Sourcing
Anonymous sources are used sparingly and only when:
- The information is of significant public interest
- Verification through other means is impossible or dangerous
- Senior editors approve the use after assessing necessity and credibility
- Readers are told why anonymity was granted
Financial & Personal Conflicts
- Reporters and editors must disclose any financial holdings, relationships, or personal connections that could impact coverage.
- Gifts, travel, or perks from sources, advertisers, or subjects are strictly prohibited.
- Opinion writers and analysts are clearly labeled. Their views are separate from Aevum News's institutional reporting.
Copyright, Attribution & Media Use
Aevum News produces original reporting, photography, and data visualizations. We respect the intellectual property of others and expect the same:
- Quotes must be attributed. Paraphrasing still requires citation.
- Images and data require clear licensing or original creation notes.
- Embargoes and press materials may be used fairly but never without contextual attribution.
- Unauthorized reproduction of Aevum content is tracked and pursued through proper channels.
