Children’s Privacy Policy (COPPA)
Effective Date: January 1, 2024 | Last Updated: March 15, 2024
FamilyNest (“we,” “our,” or “us”) provides parenting resources, educational content, and family wellness tools primarily for adults. While our platform may be accessed by children, we do not intentionally collect personal information from minors under 13 without verifiable parental consent. This policy outlines our data practices, parental rights, and safety measures specifically for child users.
1. What Information We May Collect from Children
We design our child-facing features to minimize data collection. However, in certain interactive or educational activities, a child under 13 may voluntarily provide limited, non-sensitive information, such as:
- First name or nickname (for personalized greeting or progress tracking)
- Age or grade level (to serve age-appropriate content)
- Preferences or activity selections (e.g., favorite topics, completed crafts)
- Device or browser type (for technical optimization only)
We do not collect the following from children under 13, even with parental consent, unless strictly necessary for platform functionality: precise geolocation data, social security numbers, full name combined with street address, phone numbers, or persistent identifiers used for cross-site tracking.
2. How We Use Information from Children
Any information collected from minors is used exclusively for the following purposes:
- Delivering age-appropriate educational content and activities
- Personalizing learning experiences within our platform
- Monitoring safety and reporting concerns to parents/guardians
- Generating aggregated, anonymized analytics to improve our child-friendly features
- Responding to support requests initiated by a parent or caregiver
We never sell, rent, or trade children’s personal information. We do not use behavioral targeting, cross-site tracking, or personalized advertising for users under 13.
3. Parental Consent & Verification
Before a child under 13 can access any feature that collects personal information, we obtain verifiable parental consent through one or more of the following methods:
- Submission of a signed digital consent form
- Verification via credit card transaction (with refund option)
- Third-party identity verification service
- Email confirmation with a unique security code sent to the parent’s verified address
Parents may withdraw consent at any time. Upon withdrawal, we will disable data collection for the child’s account and delete previously collected data within 30 days, unless retention is required by law.
4. Parental Rights & Controls
Under COPPA, parents and legal guardians have the right to:
- Review the personal information we have collected from their child
- Request deletion of any collected data
- Refuse further collection or use of their child’s information
- Access and update child profiles linked to their FamilyNest adult account
To exercise these rights, parents must verify their identity and relationship to the child. We will respond to all valid requests within 45 days, as required by federal law.
5. Data Security & Retention
We implement industry-standard technical and organizational safeguards to protect children’s data, including:
- AES-256 encryption for data at rest and in transit
- Strict access controls limiting employee access to child data
- Regular security audits and vulnerability assessments
- Automated deletion of inactive child profiles after 24 months (unless consent is renewed)
Despite our best efforts, no online platform is 100% secure. If a data breach affecting minors occurs, we will notify parents and applicable authorities promptly in accordance with legal requirements.
6. Third-Party Services & External Links
Our child-facing features do not include third-party behavioral tracking, chat rooms, public forums, or open comment sections. We carefully vet any integrated educational partners or content providers, ensuring they maintain COPPA-compliant privacy practices.
If our platform includes links to external websites or apps, we are not responsible for their privacy practices. Parents are encouraged to review third-party policies and supervise children’s online interactions.
7. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Children’s Privacy Policy to reflect changes in our practices, technology, or legal obligations. Material changes that affect how we collect, use, or share children’s information will require renewed verifiable parental consent. We will notify parents via email and post a prominent notice on our website at least 30 days before new terms take effect.
