Ethics Guidelines

Introduction

At The Daily Pulse, journalism is a public trust. Our mission is to inform citizens with fearless, fact-based reporting that holds power accountable and serves the public interest. These ethics guidelines establish the standards by which our journalists, editors, and staff operate. They reflect our commitment to integrity, transparency, and respect for the communities we cover.

All staff members, freelancers, and contracted contributors are expected to familiarize themselves with this document and adhere to its standards. Violations may result in editorial review, retraining, or disciplinary action.

Core Principles

Our editorial operations are built upon five foundational values:

• Truthfulness: We pursue facts relentlessly and verify information before publication.
• Impartiality: We report without bias, avoiding the promotion of personal, political, or commercial agendas.
• Accountability: We own our mistakes, correct them promptly, and maintain open lines of communication with our audience.
• Independence: We remain free from undue influence by advertisers, sources, political entities, or corporate interests.
• Respect: We treat subjects, sources, and readers with dignity, minimizing harm while serving the public interest.

Accuracy & Fairness

Accuracy is non-negotiable. Journalists must verify facts through multiple independent sources whenever possible. Unverified allegations, rumors, or anonymous claims must be clearly labeled as such and contextualized appropriately.

Fair Treatment of Subjects

We strive to provide meaningful opportunities for relevant parties to respond to criticism or allegations before publication. Quotes must be used in context. Selective editing or decontextualization that alters meaning is strictly prohibited. Visual and audio materials must not be manipulated in ways that misrepresent reality.

Labeling Opinions & Analysis

Opinion pieces, editorials, and analytical commentary must be clearly distinguished from straight news reporting. Journalists must disclose relevant expertise, past affiliations, or potential biases when contributing to opinion sections.

Independence & Conflicts of Interest

The Daily Pulse maintains a strict wall between editorial and commercial operations. Advertisers, sponsors, and marketing partners have no influence over newsroom decisions, story selection, or editorial framing.

• Journalists must disclose any financial, personal, or professional relationships that could be perceived as conflicts of interest.
• Staff are prohibited from accepting gifts, payments, or special favors from sources or public officials.
• Journalists may not use their position for personal gain, political campaigning, or promoting private business ventures.
• Recusal is required when personal relationships or outside interests compromise objectivity.

Corrections & Retractions

We acknowledge that errors can occur in the fast-paced news environment. When mistakes are identified, we correct them transparently and promptly.

• Minor errors (typos, names, figures) are corrected immediately with a brief note at the bottom of the article.
• Substantive errors that affect the story's meaning or accuracy will be corrected prominently, with an explanation of what changed and why.
• Retractions are issued when information is fundamentally flawed or cannot be substantiated. Retractions are archived and linked from the original URL.

All corrections are logged in our public Corrections Database, available for audience review.

Sources & Privacy

Protecting sources is essential to investigative journalism. We honor promises of anonymity when requested and when newsworthy, but we never guarantee absolute confidentiality in situations involving imminent harm or illegal activity as required by law.

Data Privacy & Security

We collect, store, and handle reader and source data in compliance with GDPR, CCPA, and applicable privacy laws. Sensitive information is encrypted, access is restricted, and data is retained only as long as necessary. We never sell personal data to third parties.

Minimizing Harm

Journalists must weigh the public's right to know against the potential harm to individuals. We exercise special care when covering trauma, victims of violence, minors, and vulnerable populations. Graphic content is used only when essential and accompanied by appropriate warnings.

Digital & Social Media Standards

In the digital age, journalism extends across platforms. Our guidelines apply equally to websites, apps, podcasts, newsletters, and social media channels.

• Sensationalized headlines or "clickbait" that misrepresents content are prohibited.
• Social media commentary by journalists must not undermine the credibility of their reporting or reveal confidential information.
• User-generated content must be verified and clearly attributed. We do not amplify unverified viral claims.
• AI-generated content, including deepfakes or synthetic media, must be clearly labeled when used for illustration or reporting.

Report a Concern

We welcome feedback, corrections, and ethical inquiries from our readers, sources, and staff. All submissions are reviewed confidentially and promptly by our Ethics & Standards Editor.

We remain committed to evolving with the media landscape while never compromising the core values that define responsible journalism.
