References & Citation Standards
Comprehensive guidelines for citing Aevum Encyclopedia articles, managing bibliographies, and ensuring academic integrity across all contributions.
Overview
References form the backbone of academic credibility. At Aevum Encyclopedia, every claim, statistic, and historical assertion must be traceable to a verifiable primary or secondary source. This page outlines our citation standards, supported formats, verification methodologies, and tools for seamless reference management.
This guide applies to all contributors, editors, and institutional partners. Personal reading lists or unverified web sources do not meet our citation threshold.
Our reference system supports automated export, cross-database linking, and real-time DOI resolution. All citations are validated through our multi-tier verification pipeline before publication.
Citation Styles
Select a discipline-specific citation format to view formatting rules and examples:
APA 7th Edition (Social & Behavioral Sciences)
Author-Date format. Emphasizes recency and accessibility of sources.
MLA 9th Edition (Humanities)
Author-Page format. Prioritizes primary texts and archival sources.
Chicago 17th Edition (History & Arts)
Notes and Bibliography system. Ideal for humanities with complex archival references.
IEEE (Engineering & Computing)
Numbered citations. Compact and ideal for technical documentation.
BibTeX (LaTeX Users)
Programmatic citation format for automated bibliography generation.
Source Verification Methodology
Every reference undergoes a three-stage validation process before inclusion in an Aevum Encyclopedia article:
| Stage | Process | Validation Criteria | Turnaround |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Automated Parsing | DOI/ISBN resolution, metadata extraction, link integrity check | 95%+ metadata match, active URL/DOI | < 2 minutes |
| 2. AI Cross-Reference | Contextual alignment with article claims, bias detection, recency weighting | Claim-source coherence score âĨ 0.88 | 5â10 minutes |
| 3. Expert Review | Domain specialist verification, archival cross-check, citation formatting audit | Approved by âĨ 1 verified reviewer | 24â72 hours |
Personal blogs, unpeer-reviewed preprints (unless cited alongside peer-reviewed versions), AI-generated content without human oversight, and sources behind unverifiable paywalls are not accepted as primary references.
Formatting & Structural Rules
- Alphabetical Order: Bibliographies must be sorted by first author surname. Corporate authors are filed under the organization name.
- Indentation: Hanging indents (0.5") for all entries after the first line.
- Italics: Used for journal titles, book titles, report series, and standalone works. Not used for article titles or chapter titles.
- URLs & DOIs: Always prefer stable DOIs. If unavailable, provide archive URLs (Wayback Machine preferred) and access dates.
- Multiple Authors: List up to 20 authors. Use et al. for 21+ (APA) or first three + et al. (Chicago/MLA).
- Translations: Cite the edition used. Include translator and original publication year in brackets where relevant.

Contributor Guidelines
All editors and authors must adhere to these reference standards:
- Primary Sources First: Prioritize original research, archival documents, official records, and peer-reviewed publications.
- No Circular Referencing: Do not cite other encyclopedia entries, wiki pages, or secondary summaries as authoritative sources. ot Contextual Accuracy: Ensure the cited source directly supports the specific claim. Do not overgeneralize or misquote.
- Timeliness: For scientific and technical topics, prefer sources published within the last 10 years unless referencing foundational works.
- Transparency: If a source is restricted or partially accessible, note the limitation and provide alternative accessible references where possible.
Violations of reference standards may result in article flags, editorial review, or contributor suspension. When in doubt, consult the Editorial Review Panel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cite a preprint from arXiv or SSRN?
Yes, if it has been subsequently published in a peer-reviewed journal. The citation must include both the preprint DOI and the final publication details. Standalone preprints are acceptable only when no peer-reviewed version exists and the topic is rapidly evolving.
How do I handle sources in non-Latin scripts?
Provide the original script followed by a standardized transliteration (ALA-LC or ISO 9). Include English translation of titles in square brackets. Our system auto-detects script and applies appropriate formatting rules.
What if a cited source becomes inaccessible?
Our system automatically archives URLs via the Internet Archive at ingestion. If a DOI or stable link breaks, the archival version is preserved and flagged for editorial review. Contributors should replace broken links within 14 days of notification.
