Unlike traditional encyclopedias that were historically centered on a Western perspective, Aevum employs a regional-first editorial model. This means articles about African philosophy are reviewed and enriched by African scholars. Articles about Indigenous Australian art are guided by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experts. The result is a knowledge base that is deeply authentic and rigorously accurate.

Our Regional Editorial Framework

Each major world region has a dedicated Regional Editorial Board — composed of academics, journalists, cultural practitioners, and subject-matter experts — who oversee content quality, suggest new articles, and ensure cultural sensitivity and accuracy.

Our framework recognizes that knowledge is not universal in its presentation. A topic like "medicine" encompasses Western pharmacology, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, African ethnomedicine, Amazonian phytotherapy, and more. Aevum presents all of these traditions with equal rigor and respect.

Endangered Language Initiative

Through our Endangered Language Initiative, we are working with linguists and native speakers to document and preserve knowledge in languages at risk of extinction. Currently, we maintain content in over 40 endangered languages, including Navajo, Ainu, Sámi, Quechua, and Māori.

How It Works

Regional Editorial Boards

Each of our 12 regional editorial boards operates with semi-autonomy, setting content priorities, reviewing submissions, and training new contributors. Board members are appointed based on academic credentials, cultural expertise, and demonstrated commitment to open knowledge.

Boards meet quarterly (virtually and in person) to align on global priorities, share best practices, and address any content disputes through our Global Mediation Committee.
