Journalistic Standards

Editorial Independence

Our unwavering commitment to unbiased reporting, transparent processes, and complete separation between editorial content and commercial influence.

Core Principles

At Aevum News, editorial independence is not just a policy—it is the foundation of our journalistic identity. Every story we publish, every angle we pursue, and every headline we craft is guided by the following non-negotiable principles:

Impartiality

We report facts without ideological filtering. Our coverage reflects complexity, not convenience, ensuring all relevant perspectives are presented fairly.

Autonomy

Editorial decisions rest solely with our newsroom leadership. Owners, investors, and advertisers have zero influence over story selection, framing, or publication.

Transparency

We disclose our methods, sources, and potential conflicts. When uncertainty exists, we state it clearly rather than obscuring it behind definitive language.

Accountability

Errors are corrected swiftly and publicly. We maintain a permanent corrections register and welcome constructive criticism from our readership.

Structural Safeguards

Independence requires more than intent—it requires architecture. Aevum News maintains strict operational boundaries to protect our journalism from external pressures:

Commercial Firewalls

Our advertising and sponsorship teams operate independently from editorial staff. Sponsors may purchase placement but never influence content, tone, or subject matter. All sponsored content is clearly labeled and never appears in our news sections.

Editorial Autonomy Charter

Our founding charter legally codifies editorial independence. The Editor-in-Chief retains final authority over all published material, and no executive or board member may intervene in day-to-day news judgment.

Source Protection

Journalists may refuse to disclose confidential sources unless compelled by a court order with direct relevance to criminal activity. We prioritize whistleblower safety and maintain encrypted communication channels for sensitive tips.

Conflicts of Interest Policy

Even well-intentioned journalism can be compromised by undisclosed relationships. We require all contributors to adhere to strict disclosure and recusal protocols:

  • Financial Ties: Journalists must disclose any investments, employment, or family relationships that could intersect with beat coverage.
  • Political Affiliation: Staff and freelancers may hold personal political views but must not allow them to shape reporting, framing, or source selection.
  • Recusal Protocol: If a genuine conflict exists, the journalist will be removed from the story and assigned to alternative coverage. The assignment editor documents all recusals.
  • Gift & Hospitality Ban: Aevum News staff may not accept gifts, paid travel, or exclusive access contingent on positive coverage. Standard press credentials and reasonable accommodations for logistics are permitted.

Corrections & Transparency

We recognize that fallibility is part of journalism. What separates responsible outlets is how they handle mistakes. Our correction protocol follows a clear, public process:

Immediate Acknowledgment

Upon verification of an error, the article is updated within hours, with a visible correction note appended to the original piece.

Public Corrections Log

All substantive corrections are archived in our permanent Transparency Hub, searchable by date, author, and category.

Root-Cause Review

For significant errors, the Editorial Standards Board conducts a confidential review to identify process failures and implement safeguards.

Reader Feedback Loop

Readers may submit factual challenges via our dedicated portal. Every submission is reviewed by our fact-checking unit within 72 hours.

Editorial Standards Board

Oversight ensures accountability. The Aevum Editorial Standards Board is an independent advisory body composed of:

  • Retired journalists with 20+ years of editorial leadership
  • Academic experts in media ethics and press law
  • Reader representatives elected through our community forum

The Board meets quarterly to review policy compliance, audit correction patterns, and advise on emerging ethical dilemmas (AI-generated content, deepfake verification, algorithmic bias in news distribution, etc.). Their annual report is published publicly.

Submit a Concern or Question

We welcome scrutiny. If you believe a story violates our standards, contains unverified claims, or demonstrates bias, please reach out through our secure editorial channel. All complaints are reviewed by the Standards Board, and you will receive a substantive response within 10 business days.
