Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

- Respirator/Mask: N95 for dust/fibers (brake pads, insulation), organic vapor cartridges for paints, solvents, and epoxy vapors.
Workspace & Environment Safety
A controlled environment reduces accidents dramatically. Follow these baseline standards:
- Ventilation: Run exhaust fans or work with bay doors open when running engines, using solvents, spraying, or welding. Carbon monoxide is odorless and lethal.
- Lighting: Minimum 500 lux for detailed work. Use adjustable LED work lights to eliminate shadows under dashboards and engine bays.
- Floor Condition: Keep floors clean, dry, and free of oil spills. Use absorbent pads for drips. Cluttered floors cause trips and dropped tools.
- Fire Safety: Keep a Class ABC fire extinguisher (minimum 5-lb) within arm's reach of work areas. Inspect pressure gauges monthly.
- Storage: Flammables (gasoline, brake cleaner, aerosols) must be stored in approved safety cabinets away from ignition sources.
Vehicle Support & Lifting
Improper lifting is the leading cause of fatal DIY garage accidents. Adhere to these non-negotiable rules:
- Never rely on a hydraulic jack alone. Jacks are for lifting only. Always use rated jack stands on solid, level ground.
- Identify factory lift points. Consult your manual. Never place stands under floor pans, plastic covers, or suspension arms unless specified.
- Use the 2-point or 4-point rule.
- Never crawl under a vehicle unless it is fully supported on stands, and ideally, have a safety pin or secondary block installed.
- Brake the parking brake. Block rear wheels with chocks when lifting front, and vice versa.
Fluids & Chemical Handling
Automotive fluids range from toxic to highly flammable. Handle with respect:
- Engine Oil: Irritant. Can cause dermatitis with prolonged exposure. Dispose at certified recycling centers.
- Brake Fluid (DOT 3/4/5.1): Highly corrosive to paint. Damages clear coat instantly. Absorb spills immediately with cat litter or brake fluid absorbent pads.
- Coolant: Contains ethylene glycol. Sweet-tasting but toxic if ingested. Store in sealed containers away from pets/children.
- Transmission/Power Steering Fluid: Flammable. Do not pour onto hot exhaust components. Dispose properly.
- Battery Acid: Sulfuric acid. Causes severe chemical burns. Always add acid to water, never water to acid (if mixing). Use eye wash station nearby.
Electrical & Battery Safety
Modern vehicles operate on complex 12V/48V systems. Mishandling can destroy ECUs or cause short circuits:
- Disconnect before working. Always remove the negative (black) terminal first, and reconnect it last. This breaks the circuit safely.
- Prevent ECU damage. Unplug modules (TCU, PCM, ABS, Infotainment) before removing connectors or testing with multimeters to avoid voltage spikes.
- Watch for short circuits. Use insulated tools. Never leave tools or metal scraps loose in the engine bay while the battery is connected.
- HV Hybrid/EV Warning.
- Test before trust. Use a multimeter to verify circuits are dead before probing. Assume all wiring is live until proven otherwise.
Tool & Equipment Protocols
Tools are only as safe as their maintenance and proper use:
- Inspect before use. Check for cracked handles, stripped sockets, worn wrenches, or damaged cords. Replace immediately.
- Use correct torque specifications. Over-torquing strips threads; under-torquing causes fastener fatigue and failure. Calibrate torque wrenches annually.
- Never extend sockets with cheater bars. This multiplies force beyond tool ratings and causes catastrophic failure. Use a proper breaker bar or impact driver instead.
- Impact tool safety. Wear eye protection. Secure workpieces. Never point an impact wrench at yourself or others. Check air hoses for leaks before pressurizing.
- Storage. Keep tools dry to prevent rust. Organize by frequency of use. Heavy items on lower shelves.
Emergency Preparedness
Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Every DIY workspace must have:
- First Aid Kit: Medical-grade, stocked with gauze, adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, latex-free gloves, tweezers, and SAM splint. Restock after every use.
- Emergency Eye Wash: Keep sterile saline solution or a portable eyewash station within 10 seconds of chemical handling areas.
- Communication: Fully charged mobile phone kept accessible. Emergency contacts posted visibly. Consider a landline or radio if cell service is poor in your garage.
- Fire Extinguisher Access. Class ABC rated. Know the PASS method: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.
- Nearest Hospital/Emergency Route. Post directions and phone numbers. Note any road closures or timing considerations for your location.
