1. Overview
This document outlines the exclusions, limitations, and boundaries that apply to Dictionary's services, APIs, and associated platforms. By using Dictionary, you acknowledge that our tools are designed for linguistic reference, educational purposes, and content creation support, and are not intended to replace professional translation services, legal advice, or academic certification.
2. Service Exclusions
Dictionary's core functionality covers lexical reference, synonym/antonym mapping, phonetic transcription, and multilingual translation assistance. The following are explicitly excluded from our standard service offerings:
- Professional Translation Services: Dictionary does not provide certified, notarized, or legally binding document translations. For official purposes, please consult accredited human translators.
- Academic Citation Generation: While we provide etymological data and source references, we do not generate formatted bibliographies or guarantee academic citation compliance.
- Custom Dictionary Building: Enterprise-tier custom lexicon creation requires separate licensing. Standard and Pro plans do not include proprietary dictionary compilation tools.
- Real-Time Conversation Translation: Our platform is optimized for text-based queries and reference lookups, not live voice-to-voice interpretation.
3. Data & Content Limitations
Our linguistic database is continuously updated, but certain limitations apply to data coverage and accuracy:
- Obscure & Dialectal Terms: Highly regional slang, archaic terms, or community-specific jargon may lack comprehensive definitions or usage examples.
- Contextual Nuance: AI-generated definitions prioritize statistical likelihood over contextual precision. Sarcasm, irony, and culturally specific idioms may be misinterpreted.
- Audio Pronunciations: Phonetics are generated from recorded datasets and synthetic models. Accents may vary, and native-speaker verification is not guaranteed for all language-dialect pairs.
- Historical Accuracy: Etymological traces are sourced from academic corpora but may not reflect the most recent scholarly consensus or controversial linguistic theories.
4. Performance & Availability Limitations
Dictionary operates on a cloud infrastructure with a target uptime of 99.9%. However, the following performance limitations may apply:
- Rate Limiting: Free-tier accounts are limited to 50 queries per day. Pro and Enterprise plans have higher thresholds but may still be subject to fair-use throttling during peak traffic.
- Search Latency: Complex queries involving multiple languages, synonym expansion, or AI contextual analysis may experience response times between 200ms and 2s.
- Offline Mode: Limited functionality is available offline. Full lexical database access requires an active internet connection.
- Maintenance Windows: Scheduled updates may temporarily restrict access to specific features or regional language packs.
5. Liability & Warranty Exclusions
Dictionary is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Dictionary expressly disclaims all warranties, including but not limited to:
- Merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose
- Accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of linguistic data
- Uninterrupted or error-free service availability
- Compatibility with third-party software or hardware configurations
In no event shall Dictionary, its affiliates, or contributors be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from the use or inability to use the service, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.
6. Third-Party Integrations
Dictionary may integrate with external tools, including browser extensions, IDE plugins, and LLM platforms. These integrations operate under separate terms and are subject to the following limitations:
- Data Sharing: Query data may be transmitted to third-party processors for analytics or feature enhancement. See our Privacy Policy for data handling details.
- API Dependencies: Features reliant on external APIs (e.g., pronunciation audio, cultural context databases) may be discontinued or modified without prior notice.
- Security Boundaries: Dictionary does not assume liability for vulnerabilities, breaches, or data exposure originating from third-party integrations.
7. Geographic Restrictions
Certain features, data sources, and compliance certifications may be restricted based on your region of use:
- GDPR & Data Residency: EU user data is processed within designated European infrastructure. Cross-border data transfer may apply for non-EU residents.
- Content Filtering: In accordance with local regulations, certain linguistic content may be filtered or modified in regions with strict language or cultural censorship laws.
- Feature Availability: AI-powered contextual analysis and real-time translation features may not be available in jurisdictions with restrictive AI deployment regulations.
8. Requesting Exceptions
