PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a biodegradable and bioactive thermoplastic aliphatic polyester derived from renewable resources.

Unlike traditional plastics made from petroleum, PLA is produced from fermented plant starch, typically corn, cassava, sugarcane, or sugar beet pulp. This process significantly reduces carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels.

Yes, PLA is biodegradable under specific industrial composting conditions with controlled temperature, humidity, and microbial activity. It is not recommended for landfills where it may not break down effectively.

Can I put PLA in the microwave?

Standard PLA cups can withstand short microwave bursts, but they may soften above 140°F (60°C). For frequent microwave use, please ask about our heat-stabilized PLA options.

Does PLA break down in home compost?

Generally, no. PLA requires industrial composting facilities to reach the necessary temperatures (130°F+) to decompose efficiently. Please dispose of PLA in commercial organics bins.

How does PLA compare to PET?

PLA offers similar clarity and rigidity to PET but is bio-based and compostable. While PET is petroleum-based and recyclable, PLA is preferred for sustainability goals where composting infrastructure is available.

Is PLA safe for hot drinks?

Standard PLA is not recommended for hot liquids as it may deform above 140°F. We offer heat-resistant PLA or sugarcane fiber options specifically designed for hot beverages.
