Your Green Questions, Answered
At Cup Source, sustainability isn't just a buzzwordโit's built into our supply chain. Below you'll find detailed information about our eco-friendly product lines, certifications, and best practices for disposal.
Materials & Composition
Yes! Our Eco-Green Series is designed for commercial composting. These cups feature a PLA (Polylactic Acid) lining derived from corn starch rather than traditional petroleum-based plastics.
When disposed of in an industrial composting facility, these cups break down into organic matter within 90โ180 days.
- Home Compostable: Available in select lines (check packaging for ASTM D6400 certification).
- Industrial Compostable: All Eco-Green products are certified for commercial facilities.
PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a bioplastic produced from renewable resources like corn starch or sugarcane. It is fully FDA-compliant and food-safe.
PLA offers excellent heat resistance for hot drinks (up to 180ยฐF/82ยฐC) and provides the moisture barrier needed to keep your beverages from leaking, all without relying on petroleum-based plastics.
Absolutely. For facilities that cannot compost, we offer cups with a water-based barrier coating. Unlike PE (polyethylene) linings, water-based coatings can be recycled alongside paper in municipal recycling programs, provided the local facility accepts them.
This option increases recyclability while maintaining performance for both hot and cold beverages.
Certifications & Standards
Our sustainability claims are backed by rigorous third-party testing and certifications:
- FSCยฎ Certified: Paper sourced from responsibly managed forests.
- ASTM D6400 / EN13432: Industrial compostability standards.
- BPI Certified: Biodegradable Products Institute certification for compostable products.
- FDA Compliant: All products meet food safety regulations.
- ISO 14001: Environmental management systems in our manufacturing partners.
Eco-Friendly Customization
Yes! We use soy-based and vegetable-based inks for all printing on our eco-friendly lines. These inks are non-toxic, low-VOC, and fully compatible with composting processes.
You can still achieve vibrant, high-quality branding without compromising the cup's environmental credentials. Contact our sales team to discuss custom artwork requirements.
Standard paper labels are often not compostable due to the adhesive used. However, we offer compostable label solutions made from cellulose with a plant-based adhesive. These labels break down alongside the cup in industrial composters.
Disposal & Recycling
Disposal depends on the product line:
- Eco-Green (PLA Lined): Dispose in Compost bins at facilities accepting commercial compostables.
- Recyclable Line (Water-based): Remove the lid (if PET) and place the cup in Paper Recycling.
- Standard Line: Dispose in Landfill/Trash or specialized recycling if available.
We recommend educating your customers with clear signage. We can provide digital assets and sticker templates to help you communicate proper disposal methods.
Logistics & Carbon Footprint
We optimize our logistics to minimize our carbon footprint:
- Consolidated Shipping: We combine orders to reduce total truck movements.
- Regional Warehouses: Strategic distribution centers reduce average shipping distances by 35%.
- Plastic-Free Packaging: Our shipment packaging uses recycled corrugated cardboard and paper tapeโzero plastic wrap.
- Carbon Offset Program: We partner with verified offset projects to neutralize emissions from our global logistics network.
