Editorial Governance Policy
Aevum Encyclopedia is committed to maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, neutrality, and verifiability. This document outlines the governance framework that ensures our content remains a trusted resource for researchers, students, and curious minds worldwide.
Our governance combines AI-assisted verification with human expert review. All policy changes require ratification by the Editorial Governance Board.
Overview
As a decentralized yet rigorously managed knowledge platform, Aevum Encyclopedia balances open contribution with strict quality control. Our governance model is designed to prevent misinformation, manage conflicts of interest, and ensure that every article meets academic-grade standards.
This policy applies to all content published on the platform, including articles, media, data visualizations, and knowledge graph entries. It is binding on all contributors, editors, and automated systems.
Core Editorial Principles
All content on Aevum must adhere to the following foundational principles. Violations may result in content revision or contributor sanctions.
Neutral Point of View
Articles must present all significant viewpoints fairly, proportionally, and without editorial bias. No original advocacy.
Verifiability
All claims must be backed by reliable, independent sources. "Original research" is strictly prohibited.
No Original Research
We publish what is already published elsewhere. New theories or analyses must first appear in peer-reviewed venues.
Notability
Topics must have received significant coverage in reliable, independent sources to warrant a standalone article.
Cultural Sensitivity
Content must be inclusive, respectful, and context-aware across languages and cultural perspectives.
Copyright Compliance
All media and text must be properly licensed. We enforce Creative Commons and public domain standards strictly.
Content Review Process
Every article undergoes a multi-layered review process before publication. Aevum employs a hybrid workflow that leverages AI for initial screening and human experts for nuanced judgment.
Submission & AI Screening
Contributors submit drafts via the platform. Our AI engine checks for plagiarism, citation validity, neutrality markers, and structural compliance.
Automated Fact-Checking
Claims are cross-referenced against our knowledge graph and trusted source databases. Discrepancies are flagged for human review.
Subject Matter Expert Review
Qualified editors and SMEs review flagged items, assess nuance, verify context, and approve or request revisions.
Peer Review (High-Sensitivity Topics)
Articles on controversial, medical, or rapidly evolving topics undergo blind peer review by multiple independent experts.
Publication & Continuous Monitoring
Approved content is published. AI monitors for new developments and flags articles for periodic updates based on citation drift.
Breaking news or rapidly changing topics may undergo abbreviated review but are marked with a Needs Verification tag until full review is complete.
Roles & Responsibilities
Aevum's governance relies on a tiered system of roles, each with specific privileges and obligations.
Contributors
Anyone can contribute. Responsibilities include:
- Disclosing conflicts of interest upon account creation.
- Citing all claims with reliable sources.
- Adhering to the Neutral Point of View policy.
- Responding to reviewer feedback within 30 days.
Editors & Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)
Editors and SMEs are vetted professionals with domain expertise. They are responsible for:
- Reviewing and approving/rejecting submitted content.
- Ensuring factual accuracy and proper sourcing.
- Resolving content disputes within their domain.
- Maintaining an annual recertification of expertise.
| Role | Requirements | Privileges |
|---|---|---|
| Contributor | Verified identity, COI disclosure | Create/edit drafts, suggest changes |
| Editor | Portfolio review, community nomination | Approve drafts, tag issues, moderate talk pages |
| SME | Advanced degree or professional recognition in domain | Domain-level oversight, peer review authority |
| Governance Board | Global election by community and board | Policy ratification, final dispute resolution, system overrides |
Editorial Governance Board
The Governance Board is the highest editorial authority. It consists of 11 members elected every two years from the community. The Board:
- Ratifies and amends editorial policies.
- Oversees the appointment of domain leads.
- Hears appeals from sanctioned contributors.
- Ensures platform neutrality and prevents systemic bias.
Conflict of Interest Policy
Conflicts of interest are inevitable in an open encyclopedia. Aevum does not prohibit COI editing, but mandates strict disclosure and recusal protocols.
All contributors must declare paid work, affiliations, or personal involvement with article topics. Failure to disclose results in immediate suspension.
Disclosure Requirements
Contributors must tag their user page and talk pages with the relevant COI template (e.g., {{COI-Paid}}, {{COI-Subject}}) when editing related articles.
Recusal Protocol
- Contributors with COI may submit drafts but cannot advocate for changes on talk pages.
- Editors with COI must recuse themselves from reviewing the related article.
- COI edits are automatically flagged for independent SME review.
Paid Editing
Paid editing is permitted under strict guidelines. All paid contributors must register in the Aevum Transparency Registry, providing client information and contract terms. Paid content is subject to enhanced scrutiny and must meet a higher evidentiary threshold.
Dispute Resolution
Editorial disputes are resolved through a structured escalation process to ensure fairness and efficiency.
Talk Page Discussion
Editors discuss changes on the article's talk page. Civility and consensus-building are expected.
Third-Party Opinion
If consensus fails, either party may request a neutral third-party editor to mediate.
Domain Review
Persistent disputes are escalated to the domain's SME lead for a binding decision.
Governance Board Appeal
Decisions can be appealed to the Governance Board. Board rulings are final and precedential.
Vandalism, harassment, or systematic policy violations bypass this process and are handled directly by the Trust & Safety team.
Transparency & Audit Logs
Aevum maintains full transparency regarding content changes. Every edit, review decision, and policy action is recorded in an immutable audit log.

- Edit Timestamps: Precise to the millisecond.
