Section 01

Preamble

"Journalism is not neutral. It is committed to the truth — and the truth demands fairness, balance, and the courage to let facts, not preconceptions, guide every story we tell. At Aevum News, impartiality is not the absence of conviction; it is the discipline of rigor."

— Editorial Board Charter, Aevum News, 2023

Fairness and impartiality are the bedrock of journalistic credibility. At Aevum News, we recognize that true journalism serves the public by presenting information with accuracy, context, and balance — regardless of political, cultural, or economic pressures. This policy document outlines the standards that govern every editorial decision we make.

Our commitment extends beyond individual articles. It shapes how we assign reporters, select sources, frame stories, and correct errors. It guides our relationship with advertisers, funders, and the communities we report on. It is a living document, reviewed annually and updated in response to evolving challenges in media landscape.

Key Commitment

Every journalist, editor, and content producer at Aevum News is bound by these standards. Violations are addressed through our editorial oversight process, which can result in correction, retraction, or disciplinary action.

Section 02

Core Principles of Fairness

Our editorial practice rests on six fundamental principles. Each story published under the Aevum News banner must align with these standards.

🎯

Accuracy Above All

Every claim is verified through multiple independent sources before publication. When certainty is impossible, we state the degree of uncertainty clearly.

⚖️

Balance in Presentation

When reporting on disputed matters, we present significant viewpoints with proportionate weight, without false equivalence on established facts.

🔍

Context & Depth

Facts are presented with sufficient background and context so readers can understand significance, cause, and consequence.

🚫

No Undue Favor

We do not privilege access, popularity, or ideology. Coverage is determined by public interest, editorial merit, and factual significance.

👥

Representation Matters

We actively seek diverse voices and perspectives in our reporting, ensuring underrepresented communities are included authentically.

🔄

Accountability

We correct errors promptly and transparently. Our corrections are logged publicly and reviewed for systemic patterns.

Section 03

Editorial Independence

Editorial independence is the structural guarantee that no external force — advertiser, shareholder, government, or political figure — can influence the content we publish. At Aevum News, this independence is protected by governance, not just good intentions.

Separation of Editorial & Commercial

A rigid firewall separates our editorial operations from our advertising, sponsorship, and business development teams. No member of the commercial team may:

  • Influence editorial assignments, story selection, or editorial judgment
  • Review, edit, or approve content before publication
  • Access unpublished drafts or internal editorial discussions
  • Condition advertising spend on editorial treatment of any subject

Ownership & Governance

Aevum News is governed by an independent Editorial Trust whose members serve staggered terms and are elected by a combination of peer journalists and public stakeholders. No single shareholder holds controlling interest, ensuring editorial decisions serve the public rather than private agendas.

Our Pledge

If any external party attempts to exert undue influence over our editorial content, we will disclose the attempt publicly within 48 hours, unless doing so would endanger individuals or ongoing investigations.

Political Neutrality in Practice

Aevum News does not endorse political candidates, parties, or movements in its news coverage. Our editorial opinion section, clearly labeled as such, represents individual perspectives and is distinct from news reporting. All opinion pieces are attributed to named authors and may express views that differ from our organizational stance.

Section 04

Sourcing Standards

The credibility of our journalism depends on the quality of our sources. We adhere to strict sourcing protocols designed to minimize bias and maximize reliability.

Multi-Source Verification

Every factual claim in our reporting must be corroborated by at least two independent sources. For high-impact claims — those involving allegations of wrongdoing, significant financial figures, or matters of public safety — we require a minimum of three sources, at least one of which must be documentary evidence.

Source Diversity

When covering contested topics, we actively seek sources from across the spectrum of relevant perspectives. This is not about false equivalence — established facts are not debatable — but about ensuring that interpretation, analysis, and human impact are represented from multiple angles.

Anonymity Standards

We use anonymous sources only when:

  1. The source possesses information of clear public importance that cannot be obtained through attribution
  2. There is a credible risk of harm, retaliation, or legal jeopardy to the source
  3. The editor-in-chief or deputy editor has personally approved the anonymous sourcing

When we use anonymous sources, we describe their position, experience, and relationship to the subject matter so readers can assess credibility.

Documentary Evidence

We prioritize documentary evidence — public records, data sets, official documents — as the foundation of our reporting. When documents form the basis of a story, we make them available to readers whenever legally and ethically permissible.

Section 05

Conflict of Interest

Real and perceived conflicts of interest can undermine public trust. Aevum News maintains strict policies to identify, disclose, and manage potential conflicts.

For Journalists & Editors

  • Financial holdings: Staff must not hold significant financial investments in companies or entities they regularly cover. Any holdings must be disclosed and placed in a blind trust.
  • Personal relationships: Staff must recuse themselves from covering subjects involving family members, close friends, or former colleagues.
  • Gifts & hospitality: We accept no gifts, payments, or hospitality from sources, subjects, or public relations representatives. Nominal items (e.g., press conference refreshments) are permissible.
  • Outside work: Staff must disclose paid external positions, board memberships, or consulting work that could create a perception of bias.

Annual Disclosure

Every member of the editorial staff completes an annual conflict of interest disclosure form. These are reviewed by the editorial oversight committee and maintained as internal records. Aggregated anonymized data is published annually in our transparency report.

Recusal Process

When a conflict is identified — whether self-reported or flagged by management — the individual is recused from relevant editorial decisions immediately. Coverage is reassigned to another member of the team without discussion of the original assignment.

Section 06

Corrections Policy

Errors are inevitable in journalism. How we respond to them defines our credibility. Aevum News treats corrections not as embarrassment, but as a public service and an essential component of responsible journalism.

Classification of Corrections

Type Description Response Time
Typographical Error Spelling, grammar, or minor formatting errors that do not affect meaning Within 24 hours of identification
Factual Correction Incorrect names, dates, figures, or attributed statements Immediately upon verification
Material Error Errors that change the meaning, context, or conclusion of a story Immediately, with prominent notice
Retraction Content found to be fundamentally unreliable or based on false premises Immediately, with full explanation

How Corrections Are Published

All corrections beyond typographical errors are published in two places: within the original article (clearly marked at the top) and in our dedicated Corrections Log. Corrections include:

  • What was incorrect
  • What the correct information is
  • The date of the correction
  • A brief explanation of how the error occurred (when appropriate)

Reader Submissions

Readers who identify errors are encouraged to report them via our correction form. We acknowledge all submissions within 48 hours and respond with an explanation of the action taken.

Section 07

Bias Review Process

Aevum News operates a formal Bias Review Process designed to identify and address systematic patterns of unfairness in our coverage. This is not about policing individual opinions, but about ensuring our institutional output reflects our commitment to balance.

1

Automated Analysis

Our AI-assisted editorial tools analyze published content monthly for patterns in source selection, geographic coverage, topic emphasis, and language tone. These analyses flag potential imbalances for human review.

2

External Review Panel

A rotating panel of three external experts — drawn from academia, civil society, and the journalism profession — reviews flagged patterns quarterly. Panel members are selected for their diversity of perspective and independence from Aevum News.

3

Editorial Response

When the panel identifies a credible concern, our editorial leadership must respond within 14 days with a written assessment and, if warranted, a concrete action plan to address the imbalance.

4

Public Reporting

Summaries of bias review findings and editorial responses are published quarterly in our Transparency Report. We publish both the concerns raised and how we addressed them.

The bias review process does not target individual journalists. It examines aggregate patterns across our output. If a pattern is identified, the editorial team collectively adjusts practices — not through punishment, but through improved processes and training.

Section 08

Transparency Commitments

Trust is built through transparency. Aevum News commits to the following public disclosures:

Funding & Ownership

We publish a complete breakdown of our revenue sources, including advertising, subscriptions, grants, and individual donations. No anonymous donations exceeding $10,000 are accepted. Our full ownership structure is publicly documented.

Editorial Guidelines

This document is part of our publicly available editorial guidelines. All policies governing content production, fact-checking, corrections, and ethical conduct are accessible to readers.

Data & Methodology

For data-driven journalism and investigative pieces, we publish our raw data, methodology, and analysis tools alongside our reporting. This allows independent verification and promotes reproducibility.

Political Coverage Standards

During election cycles, we publish our coverage methodology, including how we determine which events to cover, how we verify campaign claims, and how we present polling data. We commit to equal access for all qualified candidates and clear labeling of sponsored political content.

Open Newsroom

We host quarterly "Open Newsroom" events — both virtual and in-person — where readers can tour our editorial processes, meet our journalists, and ask questions about our methods and decisions.

Section 09

Compliance & Oversight

Standards without enforcement are aspirational fiction. Aevum News maintains a robust compliance infrastructure to ensure these principles are practiced, not just proclaimed.

Function Body Frequency Status
Editorial Standards Review Editorial Oversight Committee Quarterly Active
Bias Pattern Analysis External Review Panel Quarterly Active
Conflict of Interest Audit Internal Compliance Office Annually Active

The Standards Editor

Aevum News employs a dedicated Standards Editor who operates independently from the day-to-day newsroom. This role is responsible for:

  • Reviewing all reader complaints about fairness, accuracy, or impartiality
  • Auditing a random sample of published content monthly against editorial standards
  • Recommending policy updates based on emerging challenges
  • Serving as the first point of contact for external ethics complaints

The Standards Editor reports directly to the Editorial Trust and has the authority to require corrections, issue internal warnings, and escalate serious matters to the full board.

Section 11

Frequently Asked Questions

Impartiality in our news reporting means we present facts, evidence, and multiple relevant perspectives without endorsing any single position. However, certain matters — such as genocide, scientific consensus on climate change, or established human rights principles — are matters of fact, not opinion. Impartiality does not require us to present falsehoods as equally valid. Our opinion section, clearly labeled, may express positions, but news reporting adheres strictly to factual, balanced coverage.
Our editorial-commercial firewall is absolute. Advertisers and sponsors have no access to editorial decision-making. If a potential advertiser has a conflict with our coverage, we have two options: (1) decline the advertising while maintaining our editorial position, or (2) if we accept the advertising, we disclose the relationship in our transparency report. We have never altered editorial content due to advertising pressure, and our governance structure makes this virtually impossible.
Absolutely. All substantive corrections are published within the original article and logged in our public Corrections Log. The log is searchable by date, topic, and article. We also include correction statistics in our annual Transparency Report, including the number of corrections issued and the categories of errors most commonly found.
Story selection is based on editorial merit, public interest, and newsworthiness — determined by our editorial team through daily planning meetings. We use a standardized news value framework that considers impact, proximity, timeliness, prominence, and human interest. Our bias review process examines our story selection patterns quarterly to ensure no demographic, geographic, or ideological group is systematically over- or under-represented.
Violations are handled through a graduated process. Minor issues are addressed through coaching and retraining. More serious violations — such as fabricated sources, undisclosed conflicts of interest, or systematic bias — are referred to the Editorial Oversight Committee, which can mandate corrections, issue formal warnings, suspend editorial privileges, or recommend termination. All disciplinary actions regarding standards violations are documented and may be referenced in our transparency reporting.
This policy undergoes a formal annual review by the full Editorial Board. Between annual reviews, amendments can be proposed by the Standards Editor, the Editorial Oversight Committee, or through reader feedback. Significant amendments are published with a summary of changes and the rationale behind them. The complete version history is maintained in Section 10 above.
