The material breaks down into nutrient-rich organic matter within a specific timeframe (usually industrial facilities). Look for BPI or OK Compost certifications.

Recyclable

The material can be processed and reused to make new products. Paper cups require PE coating removal for recycling. PET and PP are widely recyclable.

Biodegradable

Capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms. This is a broad term; compostable is a specific, certified type of biodegradation.

Bio-Based

Derived from renewable biomass (plants) rather than petroleum. Bio-based materials are not always compostable (e.g., Bio-PE).
