Frequently Asked Safety Questions

Answers to common questions about our safety standards, insurance, and protocols.

Do I need travel insurance for my trip?
While we include basic emergency evacuation coverage in all our trip prices, we strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance. This should cover trip cancellation, medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and gear loss. Ensure your policy specifically covers adventure sports and activities at high altitudes if applicable.
What happens if I'm injured during a trip?
Our guides are trained Wilderness First Responders and will provide immediate medical care. Depending on severity, we will arrange evacuation via local services or helicopter to the nearest medical facility. All emergency medical costs are covered by our emergency fund, though follow-up care should be covered by personal insurance.
Are children allowed on expeditions?
Age requirements vary by trip. Most of our standard expeditions require participants to be 18+. We do offer specific youth programs for ages 14-17 with enhanced guide-to-participant ratios and parental consent requirements. Please check individual trip pages for age restrictions.
How do you handle extreme weather?
Safety always comes first. If weather conditions become unsafe, our guides have the authority to modify routes, delay departure, or cancel portions of the trip. We monitor weather forecasts continuously and make decisions based on real-time conditions and expert judgment. Trip modifications due to weather may be offered as alternative dates or credits.
What certification do your guides hold?
All SummitX lead guides hold at minimum Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification and IFMGA (International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations) or AMGA (American Mountain Guide Association) certification. Many hold advanced medical credentials including EMT and technical rescue certifications.
